How this character counter works
Every character you type is counted, including spaces, punctuation and emoji. "Without spaces" ignores spaces, tabs and line breaks. Words are counted by splitting on spaces, so "well-known" is one word. Reading time assumes about 225 words a minute.
Why limits differ by platform
Each platform counts slightly differently. X counts most characters as one but some emoji and links as more; Google shows about 60 characters of a title and about 160 of a description before cutting it off, measured in pixels rather than characters. Use the table as a close guide and leave a little room.
Common questions
Yes. An emoji made of several code points, like a family or a flag, is counted the way your eye sees it, as one character. Some platforms count it as two.

Characters are letters, numbers, symbols and spaces; words are groups of characters separated by spaces. Our word counter also shows the most used words.
