Experience letter for an accountant

Accountant roles ask for proof of specific work — GST returns, TDS, payroll, audit support, Tally or Zoho Books. A good experience letter names those so the next employer or a CA firm can see what the person actually did.

To whom it may concern,

This is to certify that Mr. Sajeev Kumar was employed with Bluehill Traders, Ernakulam, as Accountant from 5 April 2021 to 31 August 2026.

He was responsible for day-to-day accounting in Tally Prime, bank reconciliation, monthly GST returns (GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B), quarterly TDS returns, payroll for 22 employees, vendor payments, and preparing the books for annual audit by our chartered accountants.

He was sincere, accurate and dependable. He resigned for personal reasons and his accounts were handed over in good order. All dues have been settled.

We recommend him for any accounting position.

Signed

What it must include

  • Software used (Tally, Zoho, SAP) and specific compliances handled (GST, TDS, PF/ESI)
  • Scale: number of employees on payroll, turnover band, number of entities
  • Dates of service and whether full-time
  • A line about handover of accounts (employers value it)
  • Signature of proprietor / partner / finance head with seal

Common mistakes

  • "Handled accounts" with no detail — tells the next employer nothing.
  • Not mentioning handover; firms worry about missing books.
  • Issued before the final handover is complete.

Stamp paper, notary and signing

No stamp paper. Letterhead with GSTIN helps because the next employer may verify. Proprietorships without letterhead can print the name, address and GSTIN at the top.

Common questions

Article-ship at a CA firm — same letter?

No. ICAI issues the article-ship completion certificate (Form 108). A CA firm gives this letter only for paid staff.

Can the letter say I handled audits?

Say "audit support" or "prepared books for audit" unless you signed audits as a CA.

Self-employed accountant for several clients?

Each client can give a letter like this; or collect engagement letters and bank credits.
