Salary slip for a self-employed person

Banks, embassies and landlords ask self-employed people for "salary slips" because their checklist was written for employees. A proprietor cannot pay themselves a salary (the business and the person are the same), but a director of a private limited company or a partner drawing remuneration can. This page shows what to produce in each case.

What it must include

  • Director of a company: a normal salary slip signed by another director, with TDS under Section 192
  • Partner in a firm: a remuneration / drawings statement signed by another partner, per the partnership deed
  • Proprietor: a monthly income statement or CA-certified income certificate, plus ITR and bank statements
  • In all cases: ITR acknowledgements for 2 years, bank statements for 6 months, GST returns if registered

Common mistakes

  • A proprietor making a "salary slip" from the firm to themselves — banks see through it and it can backfire.
  • Director's slip with no TDS when the salary is above the taxable limit.
  • Figures that do not reconcile with the ITR.

Stamp paper, notary and signing

No stamp. A CA's certification (with UDIN) carries the most weight with banks and embassies for proprietors. Directors' salary slips should match the TDS shown in Form 16 / 26AS.

Common questions

The bank insists on salary slips — what do I give?

Explain you are self-employed and offer: ITR with computation for 2–3 years, 6–12 months' bank statements, GST returns, and a CA-certified income statement. Banks have a separate self-employed track.

Can I pay myself a salary from my proprietorship?

No; legally it is drawings, not salary. Convert to an OPC or private limited company if a salary structure matters to you.

Visa officer wants payslips?

Submit the self-employed alternatives above with a cover note; consulates accept ITRs and bank statements for business owners.
