What goes in an experience letter
- Company name and address (print on letterhead).
- Employee's name, ID, designation and department.
- Joining date and last working day.
- One line on conduct and performance, and the reason for leaving.
- Optionally, main responsibilities — helpful for the employee's next job.
- Name, designation and signature of the HR or authorised person, with company stamp.
Common questions
Experience letter vs relieving letter?
A relieving letter confirms the employee has been released from duties on a date. An experience letter adds the role and tenure. Many companies issue one letter covering both; this template works for that.
Is the employer obliged to give one?
There is no single law forcing it, but it is standard practice and refusing it without reason invites complaints. Under the Shops and Establishments Acts of several states, employees can ask for a service certificate.
