When you need one
Any time an office will hand something over only to the person named, and you can't go yourself: collecting a passport, a degree certificate, a courier, a cheque book, or signing a routine form. The letter names who you are sending, what they may do, and for how long.
Tips
- Attach a photocopy of your ID and the authorised person's ID; most offices insist on it.
- Be specific about the task. "Collect my original degree certificate, roll no. 1234" is better than "collect documents".
- Give an end date if it's a one-time job.
- Both of you should sign — some offices match the authorised person's signature.
Common questions
No. A power of attorney is a registered legal document for big decisions (property, money). An authorization letter is for routine errands and is accepted at most offices without registration.
Most banks accept an authorization letter for collecting a cheque book, statement or DD. For withdrawals, banks usually require their own form or a bearer cheque.
